What should I bring?

Settling into residence requires you bring things to make the room your own and to add to your personal comfort.

You’ll need:

  • bedding (twin sheets, blankets, pillow)
  • bath towels
  • toiletries (toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, soap)
  • cleaning supplies
  • kitchen supplies (pots, pans, toaster, dishes, cutlery)
  • dish cloths and towels
  • desk lamp
  • clothes hangers
  • laundry basket
  • recreation equipment--swim suit (your student fees get you into the pool), squash, badminton or racquetball racquet, ball glove, cards, board games

Optional items

  • mini fridge - Lloyd campus only. Vermilion residents are each provided with a mini fridge in their bedroom.
  • foamy - for your bed if you prefer a softer mattress
  • small fan (rooms are not air-conditioned)
  • electric power bar with surge protection for your computer

Note: No additional furniture is allowed in the residences without permission of the residence office. You are not allowed to disassemble college furniture or take it outside.

Where will I eat?

While you can cook at residence in a communal cooking area, you might not always want to. If this is the case, you can drop in for a breakfast or lunch at the cafeteria.

Will I share a bathroom?

The simple answer is, yes.

In Lloydminster, spinwheels have two levels with four bedrooms and a bathroom on each level. So in a full residence, 4 people would share a bathroom.

In Vermilion, the maximum number of people who share a bathroom is 4 in a double-double suite arrangement. 3 people share in the case of a single room that is shared with an adjoining double room. In a self-contained double bedroom, 2 people share a bathroom. In the dorm townhouses, the bathrooms are shared as well between 4 residents. The washing machine and dryer are also part of the bathroom in the townhouses. In Delta housing, 2 residents share a bathroom as there are 2 bathrooms in each unit, one on each floor.

Is Wi-Fi included?

We are pleased to offer free wi-fi for all residents for academic purposes. However, each resident is responsible for contacting SHAW for any additional wi-fi they require for streaming services and/or online gaming. SHAW will have booth set up when students move in with special student rates and packages.

What should I not bring?

  • Illegal substances such as drugs.
  • Firearms of any type aren’t permitted in residence—and leave the ammunition at home, too. This includes paintball and pellet guns, bows/arrows, hunting knives and explosive/flammable devices.
  • Pets and fish are not allowed on residence grounds or in residence buildings. This includes stock dogs or projects from the small animal clinic, or riding your horse through the residence grounds.
  • Room heating devices such as small heaters. This is a safety precaution because of the fire potential. You can adjust the heat in your room.
  • Your horse—unless you’ve already made arrangements to board it
  • Candles, incense, fireworks and sparklers. If you have to light it—then don’t bring it. And remember there’s no smoking anywhere inside residence buildings.
  • ATVs and other off-road vehicles such as snowmobiles aren’t allowed on the main campus.

Where will I park?

Good news – parking fees are included in your res fees. Passes are for scramble parking anywhere in the specific residence lots.

Where will I do laundry?

More good news! You don’t need quarters to do your laundry.

In the main Vermilion dorms, laundry facilities are in the basement. In the dorm townhouses, your washer and dryer are in the bathroom. In the Delta townhouse, laundry units are at the end of each building (yes, you do have to go outside).

In Lloydminster, washers and dryers located in the Prairies building.
